Hundreds of workplaces across South Australia will be stepping up for the Game On Corporate Cup, in what will be the biggest year in the event’s history.

Launched in 1981 and operating every year since, the Corporate Cup has established itself as Adelaide’s most popular ‘be active’ program for runners and walkers and has further evolved this year to get more people involved.

Walk/run courses will be available in various locations and for those who can’t commit to getting involved at specific locations and times, a KM Tracker category is also available where the aim is to accumulate as many kilometres as possible.

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Corey Wingard said the Marshall Liberal Government’s Game On: Getting South Australia moving initiative had come on board as the naming rights partner for the program, supporting participants to incorporate more physical activity in their day.

“One of the key outcomes we are looking to achieve through Game On is to make daily physical activity a non-negotiable social norm and we know one of the biggest obstacles to this is being time poor and having competing priorities,” Minister Wingard said.

“I would strongly encourage businesses to get involved with the Corporate Cup challenge in an effort to remove these barriers, so employees can adopt a more active lifestyle.

“Through Game On, we will continue to support initiatives that increase the physical activity levels of South Australians who are less active, as we know it provides significant health benefits, including better physical and mental health, and community connection.”

Game On Corporate Cup ambassador/dual Olympian Jess Stenson (nee Trengove) was also excited about how the program could build health and camaraderie in workplaces.

“The Game On Corporate Cup is such an excellent opportunity for businesses to focus on wellbeing of staff and encourage ongoing activity within the workforce,” Mrs Stenson said.

“With the Tokyo Olympics starting soon, it’s a great way to promote staff teamwork and encourage physical activity in an easy and interactive manner.”

More than 2,000 individuals have registered for the Corporate Cup so far and with one month until the event kicks off, event owner ACHPER SA is hoping to double this figure in the coming weeks.

ACHPER SA Executive Director Matt Schmidt said significant changes had been made to reinvigorate the program and they were working to reach pre-pandemic numbers of more than 4,000 participants.

“We’ve upgraded the results portal so individuals and teams can stay motivated using the variety of targets (distances, times, attendance) during the program,” Mr Schmidt said.

“The virtual KM tracker was introduced in 2020 as a way to continue the event during the COVID-19 pandemic and it was so popular that we have continued this flexible option.

“You can run or walk and do this at a time and place convenient to you, simply using a GPS app on your phone to track your exercise then upload it to our results portal and track you and your colleagues’ progress.”

Credit Union SA has also joined as a partner of the Game On Corporate Cup this year and Credit Union SA Chief Operating Officer Tim Prowse said staff across their organisation were getting involved, with three teams entered in the KM tracker competition.

“We love that this category is inclusive of location, ability and time, meaning our staff with flexible work arrangements, including those working from home, can get involved in the event,” Mr Prowse said.

“We have also chosen to mix up the teams with staff from different departments and locations to create further connection between staff.

“With our focus on staff wellbeing and contributing to our community, Credit Union SA is delighted to partner with the Game On Corporate Cup.”

Corporate Cup races will take place at set times in the city and Mawson Lakes, while virtual courses will be set up in Glenelg and Semaphore.

Registrations are open now and will close at 12pm on Tuesday 3 August 2021 for the city event and on Monday 9 August 2021 for the regions.
