The Malinauskas Government aims to leave a legacy from South Australia’s hosting of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™.

It has announced a one-day women in leadership symposium to address gender inequality and all that inhibits women from equally and actively leading in every aspect of community and business life.

The Power of Her - Creating Change: Harnessing Power for Gender Equality will be held on Tuesday, 8 August 2023 at Adelaide Oval / Tarntanya Wama, coinciding with Adelaide’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™ Round of 16 match.

The symposium forms part of the State Government’s work to capitalise on this momentous occasion and leave a legacy which advances gender equality, helps prevent violence against women and grows participation in the world game.

The program has been curated to bring together visionary and forward-thinking leaders who have and do organise and harness power for change.

Everyone is invited to the event, which presents opportunities to inspire, empower and equip attendees with practical tools, fresh perspectives and influential connections to advance change in their sphere.

Bestselling writer, director, body image campaigner, mother of four and 2023 Australian of the Year, Taryn Brumfitt is the first powerful woman to be announced as a speaker at the symposium.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is a once in a generation event which provides unprecedented opportunity to make positive change. We are deeply committed to leveraging this opportunity to create an enduring legacy that advances gender equality.

The Power of Her will enable us to host our emerging and future leaders, side by side with current leaders advocating for change and provide them with tools to use as they work to make a difference on all that inhibits girls and women from equally and actively participating in our economy and in every aspect of community life.

During the FIFA Women’s World Cup, we will see the best athletes in the world being celebrated for being strong, powerful, talented and physical. This has the power to transform the way women and girls are seen and to shift attitudes about the roles they can play.

Through this Symposium, we are determined to harness this power to advance last and meaningful change for girls and women.

The State Government is delivering a heavily subsidised program to ensure the Women in Leadership Symposium is accessible to all. This is about inspiring girls and women, amplifying their voices, learning from one another about how to lead change, developing safer communities and opening doors for future generations.

I’ve spoken to and met some amazing women with brilliant minds, with so much to contribute to the world and it’s truly their lack of self-love and self-respect that is holding them back.

Stopping them from putting themselves forward, from putting their hands up, from being a leader, from being a business owner – whatever it is – because of how they feel about themselves.

Being able to share my experiences with a room full of existing and emerging leaders all eager for change in the space of gender equality and wanting to know what the world would look like if they all could find their voices is exciting.

I am looking forward to the impact I can contribute in freeing some misconceptions they may have about what a leader may look like and how we can free their thinking to advocate for change.
