South Australian elite athletes can now apply for financial and performance support through the South Australian Sports Institute’s (SASI’s) Individual Athlete Program (IAP).

Funded by the State Government, the 2024 round of the IAP provides a 12-month athlete scholarship to individual athletes who are committed to taking their ability to the highest national and international levels.

To be eligible for the IAP, athletes must compete in a sport and discipline and classification represented at the Olympic, Paralympic or Commonwealth Games.

The program has had a significant impact in previous years, contributing to South Australia’s impressive representation on national teams.

Last year, 11 individual scholars who came through the program were selected to represent Australia at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Covering the sports of Athletics, Boxing, Gymnastics, Para Swimming, Para Table Tennis, Triathlon and Weightlifting, these athletes contributed to winning four medals on a fiercely competitive world stage.

$142,000 is on offer through this round of the IAP, which also includes funding for Country Athlete Awards.

Country Athlete Awards are offered to South Australian junior athletes (aged 13 – 18 years) who have a demonstrated ability to progress to senior elite level and have a permanent residence more than 130km from the Adelaide GPO.

Applications close midday on Wednesday 6 December 2023.

Representing Australia at the highest sporting level can require significant financial and personal investment; through this program, we aim to ease some of those pressures.

With less than one year to go until the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, this round of the IAP will be crucial for many South Australian athletes who are relentlessly working to achieve their sporting goals.

Many of our sporting superstars were assisted through this program. By helping more South Australians to achieve success on the world stage, we can help inspire the next generation to participate in sport and enjoy the significant benefits of doing so.
