A record 526 greyhounds were adopted through the Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) SA rehoming program in the 2022-23 financial year, up nearly 8% from the record set in 2021-22.

The GAP program delivered by Greyhound Racing SA (GRSA) ensures racing dogs and non-racers alike can find a forever home with loving and caring families.

The GAP SA team work diligently to individually assess every dog and to identify whether it is immediately ready for adoption, or whether it would benefit from the prison partnership program, or through foster care.

The streamlined approach makes the process easier, which has resulted in back-to-back record years with more than 1,000 dogs adopted in that time.

Recent changes to the betting operations tax in June’s State Budget will see GRSA receive more funding that will ensure the industry remains competitive with other jurisdictions and improves its long-term sustainability, with the expectation that funding goes to programs such as GAP.

It is excellent that in the last financial year GAP SA has rehomed a record 526 greyhounds, up from last year’s record of 488.

Adoption is a fantastic way to ensure these beautiful dogs, once their time in racing circles are done, find loving and caring families to look after them.

Greyhounds make affectionate, loving pets who love human companionship and it’s wonderful that over the last two years, more than 1,000 have found this. I thank all of the families who have welcomed them into their forever homes.

It is also excellent that a number of these greyhounds are retrained in the women’s prison before being rehomed, which greatly assists prisoner rehabilitation.

We want to ensure that this industry is sustainable long-term and ensuring the welfare of the animals involved is critical. This program is going from strength to strength, and rightly, is an integral part of GRSA’s strategy for sustainability.

We are so proud of our GAP team’s continued success in finding forever homes for South Australian greyhounds, as they smash their rehoming record for the second year in a row.

GRSA reinvests a significant amount of revenue back into our GAP SA program, ensuring we can continue to responsibly, effectively and sustainably rehome every greyhound in our care.

We also support our participants throughout the private rehoming process which means we are overseeing the welfare of our dogs at every stage of life – from pups, through their career as an athlete and onto retirement and life as a pet.

Greyhounds are such a gentle and loving breed, who are as ideally suited to life as a pet as they are to their racing careers. It doesn’t surprise us that more and more South Australians are choosing to welcome them into their home.
