Years of hard work paid off for SASI athlete and Queensland born Dane Sampson when he held on to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the men's 10m air rifle event
CONTAINING his nerves and staying focused helped Australia's Dane Sampson stand tall to claim the Commonwealth Games gold medal in the 10m air rifle final, Sampson says.
In a final of fluctuating fortunes at Brisbane's Belmont Shooting Complex, Sampson had to hope his main rival, Bangladeshi Abdullah Hel Baki, didn't produce a high enough score on his final shot.
Baki's points tally fell just short with Sampson grabbing gold with a score of 245.0, edging out Baki by .03 on 244.7. Fellow SASI athlete Alex Hoberg, 16, produced a great competition to finish fourth.
Sampson, 31, said it was an emotional day and was thrilled his family could be there to watch it.
''I was pretty anxious and I knew I had the ability but I know that anything can happen,'' Sampson said.
''The final was so close and first place was changing a bit. I just tried to stay focused on my technique to give me the best result. I really wanted to do well for my country but also in front of my family.
''I think this will open the door for me to believe more in myself.
''I feel like I've been through enough up and down times. This will open up my confidence and give me the ability to learn how to use the next competition. It was a big thrill.''
Sampson still has the 50m 3position rifle and 50m prone rifle event later in the week.
