OAMs medal for SASI champs

OAMs medal for SASI champs

SASI athletes Kyle Chalmers and Brayden Davidson were honoured at the Australia Day ceremony with Medal of the Order of Australia awards for their gold-medal returns at the Rio Olympic Games

Outstanding SASI athletes Kyle Chalmers and Brayden Davidson can add a few more letters to their names after each was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

The duo was recognised at the Australia Day ceremony for their gold medal efforts at the Rio Olympic Games.

Chalmers won the men's 100m freestyle final after finishing with a barnstorming back 50m to win. Davidson won gold in the men's long jump at the Paralympics which gave Australia its first athletics gold medal at the Paralympics.

Davidson, 19, said he had to pinch himself to believe what had happened to him in the lead up to and beyond the Games.

"This award is pretty amazing and unexpected,'' he said. "These last 18 months have been fantastic for me and the support I have had has been special. My family and friends, I think, were a bit stunned.''

Davidson, who has cerebral palsy, said it was "business as usual'' with training in full swing as he prepared for the world championships in July.

On Australia Day Davidson of Woodcroft attended South Adelaide Football Club to receive a special award from Onkaparinga Council.

For Chalmers, 18, his OAM backended a year where he dominated most major awards since becoming a household name at Rio.

Recently he won the South Australian Sports Star of the Year award and SASI's Male Athlete of the Year prize.

Davidson also won the state award for athletes with a disability and SASI's award for the same category.
