Hills tennis club gets the blues

Hills tennis club gets the blues

…and players are over the moon about it

Head for a hit of tennis in the Adelaide Hills this summer, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’d ended up at Melbourne Park, the home of the Australian Open.

To be precise: at Lobethal, home of the famed Christmas lights display, there’s something else shiny and dazzling - four bright blue tennis courts, freshly resurfaced with high-grade Truflex acrylic. (And yes, they do look amazingly like the courts that Federer, Djokovic, Kerber and Williams will be running around on at the Oz Open next month!)

It’s taken a mammoth effort by the Lobethal club to achieve the upgrade, with lots of planning and liaising and lobbying and letter-writing to secure the $48,000 needed.

In the end, the Office for Recreation and Sport footed 50% of the bill, contributing a touch over $24,000 through Round 41 of the Active Club Program. Other funding partners included Tennis Australia and the Commonwealth Government.

“I am absolutely thrilled at the funding result for the clubs and community involved who can use these courts,” said Lobethal Tennis Club President Di Farrell. “Active sport really brings communities together.”

And the good news is spreading…

Already the courts have an established clientele that numbers in the hundreds, including competition tennis players and netballers, plus local schools for SAPSASA tryouts and knock-out tennis and netball competitions.

Now - much much safer, and wearing an acrylic ‘skin’ that’s designed to withstand years and years of sporting punishment - Lobethal locals are confident the courts will become even more popular!
