A tour of Fiji next month will be a key to selection in next year's Australian Netball World Cup team to compete in Botswana.
Outstanding young SASI netballers Hannah Petty and Sasha Glasgow have won selection in the 14-strong squad for the 2016/17 Australian Netball World Cup squad to tour Fiji in January 2017.
Petty, in the Adelaide Thunderbirds squad, and rising star Glasgow, were named by Australian World Youth Cup coach Tania Obst, national selector Jill McIntosh and Netball Australia's Nathional Pathway manager Stacey West following a selection camp in Canberra at Netball Australia's Centre of Excellence.
The team of 14 players, plus coaches and selectors, will travel to Fiji on January 11 for a friendly tournament against Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa.
The pressure mounts from there with the a World Cup Youth squad announced in April. The final team, selected in May, will travel to Gaborone, Botswana, in July for the Netball World Youth Cup.
All athletes must be under the age of 21 years as of December 31, 2016.
Meanwile, SASI scholarship holders Chelsea Blackman (Contax) and Georgia Dent (Matrics) recently were selected in the SA under-17 netball squad. Twelve players made the final cut after regular trials began in mid October.
Five players came from outside of the metropolitan area.
