South Australian canoe sprint head coach Nathan Luce is aiming for a successful meet at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Canada next month.

Canadian born Luce who co-coached the Australian Olympic K4 Gold Medallist Crew in London in 2012 has been the head coach at the South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) since October 2011.

“Our young athletes have been training up to 20 hours a week to prepare for the Junior and Under 23 World Championships and we are confident of some top 5 results,” said Mr Luce.

“This is the first time Under 23’s will compete at the World Championships so it is a bit of an unknown as to how we will go against European teams who have been competing at this age level for a while now,” he said.

“Glen Rypp who competes in the Under 23 K4 category is a definite top 5 chance along with Luke Hannaford and Zac Ryan who compete in the Under 23 K2 category,” he said.

“We are really looking at this as a development regatta for our Junior and Under 23 athletes as we aim for them to gain senior National selection in future Olympic Games and open age World Championships,” said Mr Luce.

Other athletes competing include Sean Lohse the current U/18 National champion in the K1 category. Maddy Davies and Jose Bulmer will also compete at the Junior level. The SASI Canoe sprint program caters for sprint / canoe athletes who are aspiring to the national team.

The program is funded and supported by the South Australian Government through SASI in partnership with Australian Canoeing and the Australian Sports Commission.

The 2013 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships will be held from the 1st of August to the 4th of August in Ontario, Canada.
