On 7 April 2014 the Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS) held its inaugural Governance, Diversity and Opportunity – Are you on Board? Conference.
More than 180 men and women attended from various sport and recreation, government and private sector organisations.
Uncle Steve Goldsmith performed a traditional Kaurna Welcome to County, underpinning the theme of the conference with a brief talk about his culture and people and a performance on his didgeridoo.
Paralympic gold and silver medallist Katrina Webb emceed the day in medal-winning style, interposing her own experiences, goals and observations as a successful businesswoman and athlete along the way.
Minister for Recreation and Sport Leon Bignell opened the conference and applauded the ORS for hosting it.
He stressed the importance of good governance and organisations having boards with a mix of skills and diversity so they can represent their members and the community. He said that South Australia leads the country in having women on boards. To continue the trend, he encouraged women to add their names to the Premier’s Women's Directory, which is a database of South Australian women wanting to serve on boards and committees. The directory was initially established to improve the gender balance on boards and committees in South Australia and to achieve goals set out in South Australia's Strategic Plan. It now contains the CVs of more than 800 women.
